Welcoming Dawn in Diane Kennedy Fashion

We recently made an addition to the Diane Kennedy Team and we wanted her to become more acquainted with our line. What better way to do that, than to try them on! We spent the day giving her a little makeover and we think she looks GORGEOUS! Don’t you think so?

Thank you so much to Katie of Pout Beauty for doing such an amazing job on Hair & Make-Up.

While we were shooting, we tossed a few questions her way and she handled them like a pro. Without further ado, let’s get to know Dawn!

Tell us a little about yourself. Outside of the office, what definitively makes you Dawn?

Up until fairly recently, I’ve been a student for most of my life, while juggling a full time position as an aspiring author.

What are you looking for in a piece of clothing? What’s your favourite Diane Kennedy item so far?

When I’m at home, I like to lounge so I like cosy clothes. When I’m in the office, I’m all over the warehouse so I’m keen on looking professional but with freedom of movement. One of my favourite things about DK is that the bamboo fabric feels amazing against my skin, so whether I’m chilling at home or active about the office, I’m always comfortable. Right now, my favourite item has got to be the Serene Pant. I love the loose & flowy cut; I think it hangs so well and flatters my figure. I absolutely love how it looks with heels and I think it’s a great alternative to a skirt or dress pants.

What’s your favourite part of working for Diane Kennedy? If you weren’t working here, what would you be doing?

Having worked in the Automotive Industry for 6.5 years, it is SO refreshing to work in a creative environment in the women’s fashion industry. The best days at work are when I get to be a fly on the wall during photoshoots in our studio. It was neat to rep the Diane Kennedy line in front of the camera for once! If I wasn’t loving it here, I would be writing fiction or learning how to draw!

Tell us a fun fact about yourself!

Throughout my childhood & young adulthood, I’ve lived in 3 different cities in Canada (Waterloo, Kelowna & Vancouver), as well as a 5 year stint in Fort Collins, Colorado! Although I’m a Canadian through and through, there is something to be said about being able to see the foothills, plains and The Rockies all in one view.

We had so much fun dressing Dawn up and we’re so excited to have her on board!

Welcome to the team, Dawn!

Diane’s Lookbook: A Tunic For Every Day

Welcome to another edition of Diane’s Lookbook! Today, I’d like to spotlight a couple of new tunics, as well as re-introduce everyone to a much loved DK Classic, The Grace Tunic.

I love how serendipitous life can be sometimes. I originally approached Rebecca’s mother to spend her day off in my clothes. We were all ready to meet up when last minute when she got called away to a meeting. As luck would have it, Rebecca and her mum share much more than just great genes, they can share clothes, too! My trusty “paparazzi”, Logan and I quickly made our way to her and we had a fun day in the park getting to know each other.

The first top I had her try out was a tunic that we released a few seasons ago and decided to re-release, due to popular demand.

There’s no doubt why it is so popular; the soft mock-shawl cowl creates such a flattering V-neckline and the European-imported buttons add a lovely touch to the princess seams.

Right after we did a quick wardrobe change, we took a few “in action” shots of her taking a phone call. Pretty lucky that our Spirit Tunic has some great pockets along the slimming diagonal seams! In fact, that was the inspiration for this top. I personally wanted a “Go-To” top I could use for work/errands.

We ended our afternoon on a Kind note, taking a stroll in a nearby dog park. A fun note about this top; the raised back collar and deep V-Neck was a suggestion from one of our favourite buyers. We took her suggestion and added a diagonal seam  for simple elegance.

I have to admit that I was nervous to see my clothes on Rebecca. I’ve always identified my brand with women of my age. But after seeing how beautiful and happy she looked in my tunics, it definitely changed my mind.

When I asked Rebecca how she felt when she put on her first Serene Pant, she said

To be honest, I wasn’t sure at first, but after putting them on, I never want to take them off! I can’t get over how comfortable I am. I’m so used to being uncomfortable in my own clothes.

Best compliment ever! It pleases me to no end that my DK line is accessible to all ages. And to think I would have never come to such a conclusion if happenstance hadn’t blown us Rebecca’s way.

Plus Size Yoga Style

Cruise Cami, diane Kennedy, Dressing for yoga, plus sized yoga wear Yoga is an exercise routine that almost anyone can do. It supports you at whatever age you are, and whatever level of fitness you may be starting at. The balance of meditation, stretching and self-reflection, even if only done for 10 minutes a day, can give you a big energy boost. You can find almost all types of yoga practice; some for hormonal balance, fertility or pregnancy and even divine feminine power. I have heard women say that yoga has helped them with the obvious benefits of physical and emotional balance, as well the unexpected benefit of body self-acceptance. I recently had the chance to try a few drop-in Yoga classes and I have to admit that, despite my apprehension, it was a unique, relaxing experience. A good part of that was having dressed comfortably for the occasion!

While there are many companies providing yoga wear to the masses, there are not many options for plus-sized women. Yoga can assist us in shedding negative self-images, but it can be disheartening if you cannot find the appropriate items to wear. Bamboo fabric is an ideal textile for work out wear, because it has a good amount of stretch, and wicks moisture and heat away from your body. The Rejuvenate Legging is sized up to a 3X and is cut to fit comfortably in the crotch and seat, which is definitely a must if you are practicing yoga poses. The Cafe Legging is a shorter length, and hits just below the knee, which could work well if you want to be a little less covered.

Many plus-sized women have said that wearing looser clothing just feels better when working out. Perhaps it is because of sweating or more likely, because they want to feel comfortable. When entering into a yoga studio, for the first time or not, you want to completely concentrate on the workout, and focus less on how you look. Comfort and wearability are key! Our Cruise Camis have been popular with our customers to wear under jackets, for travelling or simply worn on their own. The generous cut and v-neckline are also practical to wear for yoga practice, if simply because the fabric is soft, comfortable, 92% bamboo jersey-knit blended with 8% lycra. Bamboo is as easy to care for as a cotton t-shirt, simply launder it on the delicate cycle with similar soft garments. Unlike other yoga-brands on the market, our clothing can be  dried in the dryer on a low to medium heat setting.

Flight Capri pants are another option for yoga-wear, with a looser fit and a wide signature smooth waistband. The pockets may come in handy for yoga classes outdoors too! Certainly in the Vancouver area, in the summertime we see a variety of yoga classes being held on beaches and parks. One thing for certain is that yoga has become popular over the last number of years because it can be embraced by women, men, young and old and a variety of body shapes and sizes. The gentle push of the muscles and connection to your soul can enable you to push harder than maybe you have ever done before in any exercise routine. Yoga teaches you to be in tune with your body, at whatever stage that may be in your life.

I want to end this post with a beautiful message our instructor shared with us at my yoga experience. Take a moment to breathe deep and let the words resonate with you, too.

Have you tried yoga classes? It may just be a form of exercise that you didn’t realize you would love.

The New Soft Suit

Soft Suit, diane kennedy, bamboo jackets, dressing spearates, vests, jeckets, fashion over 50When was the last time that you wore a suit? Maybe to a job interview or to see a lawyer? Unless perhaps, you are a lawyer, over the past number of years, the structured suit as we used to know it has been eliminated from most professional women’s wardrobes. As the workplace becomes more casual, dressing has become a variety of separates rather than a matching two-piece suit. There are always occasions where a more pulled-together look is necessary, but rather than going with stiff and structured fabrics, separates in softer fabrics like bamboo, can create a soft suit that also looks professional. Diane’s designs address the need for a more business-like jacket and coordinating bottoms without compromising style or fit.

A jacket can come in handy for many occasions; as part of a soft suit look, or as something to throw over a pair of black pants or denim. Sometimes in the cooler evenings, a soft jacket can be the perfect piece to put on over a dress. Our Bon Voyage Jacket is a great layering piece with it’s notched collar, 3/4 sleeves and zippered front. It works well over a dress, or as part of a suit, either paired with our Serene Pants, Relaxed Capris or a Smitten Skirt. It comes in 4 colour ways, which can be paired with the same coloured Navy bottoms for a monochromatic suit-look, or just worn as separates. Another way it can be worn is with the matching Cami, for a monochromatic look on top, and then you can choose a solid on the bottom. Either way, your soft separates will create a comfortable and put-together look, which can work in most office environments.

Another way to achieve a more professional look by layering separates is by adding a vest. A vest can be layered with anything from a tunic to a dress and can give a more structured look without the weight of a full jacket. Our Recharge Jacket is layering made easy! This vest pairs perfectly with tunic and tops of all sleeve lengths. It features front pockets, and an easy fit throughout, including a box pleat in the back. This year we added the Recharge Jacket to our collection, which is the same style as the vest, but with sleeves. Available in Black, White and Navy, it is a jacket that can be worn year round and with a large variety of bottoms. The beauty of it is that it can appear more casual if paired with jeans or leggings, or more formal if paired with a wide leg pant or skirt.

Stripes for Spring. Can you wear Stripes?

diane kennedy, stripes for spring, fashion over 40, fashion over 50
Stripes for Spring?

Yes you can! Stripes done the right way are flattering and always on trend. Nothing says Spring and Summer like a Navy Stripe tunic with white jeans or leggings and a floppy hat, or espadrilles. It seems that, every Spring, fashion editors are talking about stripes on the runway and marching right into shops for Spring. The thing about stripes is that they never really go out of style.

Stripes for Spring, Diane Kennedy, Fashion over 40, Bamboo, clothing, made in canadaOne of the first fashion rules you probably remember hearing is that horizontal stripes make you look wider. And, that can be true. However, it depends on two things: how the stripe runs on the garment and the width of the stripe. A horizontal stripe, paired with a stripe cut on the bias (like in our Clipper Tunic or Mod Tunic styles), can be very flattering and accentuate the curve of your body. A smaller stripe, like the one in our Starboard Tee, is also much more flattering than a very wide stripe. The Starboard Tee has the lines going in every direction, breaking up your figure in the sleekest way. If you are trying to accentuate your assets, then wear your stripes on that part of the body. For example, our Striped Tunics accentuate the upper body rather than the lower body. If you’re very small on the lower half, then a stripe pattern can work as a pant or legging, but then pair it with solid top like our Mod Tunic in Black

Another great thing about stripes is that they can be dressed up or down! A top like our Starboard Tee can be worn with a maxi skirt and sandals for an evening out… or leggings and a denim jacket on top for something more casual. Striped tops can be considered almost like a neutral backdrop for statement jewelry; a bold necklace either long or short paired against a stripe adds a little dimension and texture.

Have you added some stripes to your wardrobe for this Spring?
