As many exciting things are happening within the world of Diane Kennedy and Cherry Velvet, we thought it might be fun to post a little bit more about Diane, the woman behind the design of both brands.

What is your favourite colour?

Red is my current fav. I love colour, it’s hard to pick just one. Green is a close second.

What is a common misperception about your brand?

That it’s only available in Plus sizes. We do an extended range of sizes from S to 3X.

kim cattrall sensitive skin, diane kennedy, bamboo, made in canada, fashion over 50Which celebrity would you like to dress in your designs?

I’d like Kim Cattrall to wear my clothes on her new show, Sensitive Skin. I love that she supports Canadian designers and how fitting that bamboo is excellent for sensitive skin because the fibers are so smooth and non irritating (and Made in Canada).

Your favourite piece of clothing that you have ever designed? Why?

My favourite item to wear must be my Bamboo Leggings. I wear them everyday like a uniform because they’re so comfortable. The favourite item I’ve ever designed must be my very first Cherry Velvet dress called the Charlotte. It was the beginning of something wonderful.

What are you reading?

Ayn Rand, Atlas Shrugged.

What is your favourite animal?

Hummingbirds, I have a feeder right outside my window and a garden full of red and orange flowers designed to attract them. They’re so delicate and beautiful.

If you weren’t designing your own line, what would be your dream job?

Since this IS my dream job….there is no other.

If you had a chance to travel anywhere in the world, where would you pick?

So many choices…Italy and Ireland are the next places I’d like to visit. Tofino is a local destination I’ve never been and must get to sometime.

What made you decide to start your own line?

I turned 40, had the vehicle to make it happen (my own company) and couldn’t find the kind of clothes that I wanted to wear. If I liked the style, they didn’t come in my size or fit right. If they fit, I didn’t like the style.

Chocolate or Vanilla?

Chocolate (as in Bernard Callebaut…best chocolate ever). If we’re talking ice cream, the answer is Real Vanilla bean and / or Vanilla with dark chocolate chunks and amaretto cherries.

If you weren’t getting paid for what you do, would you still be doing it?

I’ve been sewing and designing clothes since age 12. The answer is definitely yes. Designing clothes is what I’m meant to do.
