Diane Kennedy Studio Shop

 Studio Shop February 2-3!

Diane Kennedy Studio Shop

Once a month Diane Kennedy opens the doors and extends a warm  invitation to our customers to come and shop in our showroom.  It gives us a chance to actually meet our customers in person and establish relationships that go well beyond an online order. We get to see you in our clothes. To see your happy face when you find the perfect piece, and work with you to make sure you are getting the best fit possible.

“Our clothing comes in sizes Small to 3X with the most selection in size Large to 3X.”

There’s also a huge benefit for you too! We offer excellent customer service in our comfortable showroom. The fact that our studio is attached to our warehouse means we can get our hands on anything in stock. If it exists, it’s here. It gives you a chance to play with styles and colours you might not have thought of before. Something that you might not be as comfortable doing when you’re ordering online. We also have a couple of sale racks here that feature exclusive deals that aren’t even available on our website.

“Something that is difficult to convey to our online customer is just how amazing our clothing feels”. In a world of polyester, especially in the plus size market, our fabrics are very different. We use primarily Bamboo knit of the highest quality. In fact about 98% of everything we manufacture and sell to you is  made with natural fibres. The weight, drape and unbelievable softness of our fabrics speak for itself at the first touch.

We want you to know that you can also call or email to set up an appointment Monday to Friday between 10am and 4pm for private shopping in our showroom. If you’re from out of town why not put it on your schedule the next time you visit Vancouver?

Of course we are always here to offer our online customer the best experience possible as well. We encourage you to call or email with any questions you may have and we will always do our best to find you the right styles and the best fit for you!

Eastside Culture Crawl: Nov 17-20

Every year, the team here at Diane Kennedy looks forward to the Fall season in part because our city holds a very special 4 day event. This year, 2016 will mark The Eastside Culture Crawl’s 20th year running. It’s an event that celebrates the tremendous impact that Art and Design has on our East Vancouver Community. The Crawl began as a small group of Eastside artists interested in engaging with the public. They eventually decided to come together as a circle and promote an open studio event.

As one of Vancouver’s annual cultural highlights, The Culture Crawl provides a great opportunity to explore East Vancouver’s vibrant arts scene and laude our local artists for their contributions to our city. Vancouver’s strong and creative arts community is a key element of what makes Vancouver such a dynamic and thriving city. As a proudly Canadian fashion line, being located in the heart of such an inspiring neighbourhood is such a blessing to us.

In the first few years, attendance was low at only a few hundred people; participants and attendees included. Fast forward twenty years later and The Eastside Culture Crawl has grown to include over 450+ artists and more than 80 venues. Participants include visual artists, craftspeople and designers, and the event attracts an audience of more than 25,000.

Eastside Culture Crawl Art

We’re so honoured to include ourselves in the Crawl’s wonderful line-up of textile and design artists; their work is well worth your attention. Textile practices go back as far as humanity’s origins. Deborah Valoma, Professor at California College of the Arts, refers to it as “string technology.” Over history, this “technology” has led to the invention of basketry, weaving, knitting, stitching and ever increasing complexities of design and process. It’s only natural that the fashion industry works closely with the artistry of textile production. Together, pieces are created that not only express one’s individuality, but can also make statements about social/ethical values, such as our personal commitment to Eco/Ethical fabric and production practices. This year we’ve also included the art of (machine) embroidery into our designs.

From November 17-20, our designer, Diane, will be on hand to chat with you about our inspiration, process and execution of our work. Our design process is created almost entirely on a computer, but using a machine does not mean we simply pushes a button and the finished product appears. Computer–aided design, for example, is a labour intensive, highly skilled process. Patterns need to be created and tested, prototypes are sewn and fitted on real bodies. Adjustments are made, patterns are graded for size and a cut layout is created to make best use of the fabric. Then of course each Diane Kennedy garment is sewn on  machine by a skilled seamstress, all of which happens at factories also close by in East Vancouver.

The Eastside Culture Crawl is a grand opportunity to learn more about this process  and we’re excited to show you how much goes into every piece we design & produce.

We Heart East Vancouver!

DianeKennedy_WeLoveEastVancouver_Blog

As a proudly Canadian business, we love to talk about the lovely city we’re located in.

After years at our faithful Gastown location, we recently moved to the beautiful area of East Vancouver.

Even though it’s only eight blocks away from our previous location, East Van is well known for being a Boho neighborhood rife with creative souls and art studios. Such a turn around from the hustle & bustle of one Vancouver’s most famous areas!

After the initial “hit-the-ground-running” move, it certainly didn’t take long for us to settle in among the passionate artists and historical train tracks. although it’s been just over a year since we moved in, it feels like we’ve been here forever. If there’s one thing we love the most, it’s all the space we have in our warehouse. It may be silly to say, but the extra space in our warehouse is such a blessing and it’s wonderful to be able to have space more conducive to creative design work like ours!

Operating in such a driven industry here in Vancouver, we have been fortunate enough to work with some incredibly talented local businesses. In today’s blog post, we wanted to spotlight a few we’re proud to have had a chance to collaborate with.

Fluevog Shoes

Internationally recognized and incredibly unique, Diane has appreciated the fine details and amazing design of John Fluevog’s shoes for years. Always ahead of the fashion curve, she discovered her first pair of Fluevogs (lovingly nicknamed by “Vogs” by avid fans) when the business was just starting out as “Fox & Fluevog”. Fast forward to now and Diane Kennedy put Fluevogs on once again, most recently on our models, for our Fall 2016 Catalogue.

Design Sportswear

Everyone who owns a Diane Kennedy piece has seen our signature screen printed labels…

DianeKennedy_DesignSportswearEstablished in 1988, Design Sportswear is one of Vancouver’s pioneer screen printing houses. Since Diane Kennedy started nine years ago, we have been confidently using Design Sportswear’s services to add our brand our garments.

Sonja Picard

DianeKennedy_SonjaPicard

Being owner of a company whose core values are centered around Eco-friendly, social responsible standards, it’s no surprise that Diane loves to adorn herself  (and our models!) in jewelry that is not only gorgeous and deeply meaningful but promotes very similar values. We love her Eco-friendly “Recycle Your Love” program which gives her customers a chance to breathe new life into their old jewelry. As well, Diane loves to pair her line with Sonja’s pieces because the hammered silver look that she specializes in is such a complementary look for our clothes.

East Van Print

DianeKennedy_EastVanGraphics

With the rise of self-serve online printing services where everything is automated, it’s such a breath of fresh air to receive direct customer service. We love that we’re able to talk to a “real person” when we order from East Van Print. Diane Kennedy has been using East Van Print for all our signage and printing needs since we began!

Railway Cafe

DianeKennedy_RailtownCafe

Last but not least, we would be remiss to not mention a lunch spot that everyone here at Diane Kennedy misses dearly. As much as we love our new location, we have less variety for lunch in an area that’s largely commercial/industrial. Despite being considered an East Van establishment, Railway Cafe was closer to our previous location in Gastown and it’s been said that Diane longs for their absolutely amazing salad bar…

Overall, it’s been such a wonderful experience, being here in such a welcoming, creative neighborhood. Here’s to many more years of being a proud Vancouverite business!
