When you’ve been in business for 14 years, you get to meet and work with people from all walks of life. Sometimes they come, sometimes they go, and sometimes you get lucky and they come back around again. Flashback five years ago to our former studio on Railway Street; Barb came to work with us for a time. She had been the owner of the original Bodacious store on Main Street where a lot of our Diane Kennedy brand was sold. It seemed like a natural progression to hire someone that was already so familiar with our brand. That was then, and same goes now.
I’m so excited to announce that we have Barb back on staff here. Just chatting with her over lunch today about her favourite Diane Kennedy pieces, all of which she still has from at least 6 years ago. Her favs are the Rejuvenate legging and the Gotta Have It Jacket. Being a plus size woman as well as a plus size retailer for so many years, she has a keen understanding of women’s bodies and issues around buying clothes. She’s a plus size fit expert!
Barb loves fashion and isn’t afraid to push the limits of her own style. Her favourite thing to do is take a classic style and find a way to make it uniquely her own. She loves the comfort and cut of Diane Kennedy clothing because there’s really nothing quite like the way bamboo drapes and flows to flatter any body type. More than anything she enjoys sharing her joy of beautifully made clothes with our customers. Helping someone discover a colour or cut that just works for their personality AND body type is where the true joy comes from for Barb and she says there’s nothing better than watching someone’s face light up when they try something on that really, truly fits their body and sense of style.
We asked Barb to pick out a few new favourites from our Spring collection and model them for us.
If you’ve never crossed paths with Barb, perhaps you will be lucky enough to experience her warm and enthusiastic energy when you come by to shop. Or, possibly, Barb will be the one to help you when you need customer service.
Welcome back to our team, Barb!
Don’t miss out we’ve extended our Past Season Sale this week, we’re offering 20% off our sale section here!
What to do when there’s one new style that comes in last at the end of the season, when there’s no Plus Size Model around? It’s called the Pendrell Tunic and it’s last to come in, partly because of the extra time it took to embroider the scarf panel. It’s a charming image familiar to those living on the West Coast, that of the Pacific Blue Heron. I decided that I needed to put it on and be the plus size model, myself.
I remember several years back, one of my California retailers said to me, “…you should be the model!”. I knew she was serious. I am my own target market; A middle-aged female, plus size, with a career and a grown son. I’m 51, size 1x and 5’2″. Many of my customers fit a similar profile. So, I decided to doll up and get in front of the camera.
We chose several rich shades of teal blue, highlighted with silver and salmon for the embroidery thread. Thank you to my charming and talented assistant, Tatyana, for her beautiful artwork. It was inspired by the lovely deco images on the Marine building in downtown Vancouver. For more info on our embroidery and inspiration, please check out our blog post, Embroidery Threads.
I love the new Pacific Pant I’m wearing with the Pendrell Tunic, too. Admittedly, I needed some very high heels to make the length and proportion work. A classically tall, Plus Size Model I am not! Perhaps there needs to be a new category; Petite Plus Size Model.
Still, I love the outfit; I’m fond of wearing one colour from top to bottom, it gives a very long ‘lean’ look. Also, I can’t help but mention how comfortable this outfit is, It’s like wearing the softest PJ’s all day.
It never hurts to climb out of your comfort zone, and I’m speaking of modelling. I know it’s ideal for you, as the customer, to be able to see what an article of clothing on someone of a similar size and proportion. So perhaps you’ll see more of Diane Kennedy, the Plus Size Model, in the future.
Vancouver is well known for its mild seasons and gorgeous scenery. Summer is no exception, and thankfully you don’t need to get out of the city to enjoy our greenery. One of Diane’s favourite new tranquil spots in Vancouver is only a few minutes away from our offices and offers peaceful respite. A happy bonus as well, it is far less busy than (and just as beautiful as) the tourist must-see, Dr. Sun Yat Sen Gardens.
Hidden away in plain site at Hastings Park Conservatory, you’d never know it’s located along a busy main road!
Completed in 1993, The Park Board concurred with the PNE (a local non-profit organization that hosts our annual 17 day summer festival) and the Japanese-Canadian community to create the garden. It would end up representing the first step in Hastings Park’s transformation into the public green space that it is now.
With such a (not-so) hidden gem readily available to us, Diane and our media team decided to go for a quick stroll one sunny afternoon and take some pictures.
Serendipitously, while we were walking around, we noticed a very familiar flower…
Anyone who owns a Diane Kennedy item, knows our hangtags feature lovely artwork of this delicate flower! Aptly named the Pink Japanese Anenome, this gorgeous botanical is a Summer to Fall perennial; perfect for your own garden, if you have the space. This beauty likes to spread out. Just a little handy tip!
With Mother Nature showing off her colours, Momiji-style, Diane decided to show off her own with this darling summer outfit.
Diane designed our Downtown Tunic with a shorter length than some of our other tunics (with a shoulder to hem measurement of 26.5″), making it the perfect top for Petites to layer underneath our ever versatile Recharge Vest.
Pair it with another favourite, our popular Deck Tights, and you’ve got an outfit that flatters all statures. They look gorgeous with a great pair of heels! Diane loves wearing them with her blue-hued “Hopeful Flourish” shoes from Fluevog.
With practicality in mind, we also love this outfit because it’s a great look for transitioning into Fall (which is still thankfully at least couple months away). The thermal regulating, hypo-allergenic properties of our signature bamboo fabric will keep you comfortable as summer heats up, while our designs also allow for lots of layering and coverage, as it gets cooler as well.
We hope you enjoyed this little photowalk! It’s wonderful to be able to step outside and be so inspired by the beauty of your city. Don’t you agree?
They say it’s always a good idea to take a walk in someone else’s shoes once in awhile. As a fun little experiment, I challenged myself to step outside my comfort zone and take on being model AND photographer.
So I donned my favourite, locally made accessories (courtesy of Sonja Picard & John Fluevog) and took a few fun pics.
More than one person has said that I would make a great model for my own line because I design for the demographic I fit into. As a fashion forward consumer and designer, I recognize the need for fun fashion for plus-sized woman. At 5’2, it’s also reassuring to know that there are many items that can also suit a shorter frame. The petite pants that I design with my stature in mind are one of the most popular items on our website.
We just got in a whole slew of new spring items, including some new tunics that I’ve had my eye on. This gave me the perfect opportunity to get out my selfie stick and take some fun #ootds (Outfits Of The Day). Don’t knock it until you’ve tried it! I think it’s a great way to be in control of how you look in the picture.
Personally, I rarely like any photo of myself, taken by others. My girlfriend Shelly made a good call by giving me this selfie stick for Christmas and this was my first opportunity to make some good use of it. Sure, you may look a little silly taking it, but find a nice private place (like the comfort of your own showroom) and it’s all good. 😉
I love the neckline of this tunic, it’s a V neck with a cheeky little cut out, and all the bright colours like Grape, Mango, Sky and Aruba. The handy pockets make it easy to keep my iphone close.
I hope you enjoyed my wee artistic endeavor, smiling face and one of my new favourite tunics!
