A few years ago while traveling in the United Kingdom I discovered a fun giftware shop in Manchester with the most adorable red poodle brooch. It reminded me of vintage bakelite and so I’ve been looking for more ever since. Now I’m excited to tell you that we are selling these very same Erstwilder brooches in our showroom and online.
Limited Edition Erstwilder Brooches
Erstwilder designs and produces collectable, limited edition brooches made of layered resin. The detail is truly amazing! They obviously draw a lot of inspiration from all things nature, vintage, rockabilly, retro and have a love of animals of all kinds too. Each brooch comes its own gift box complete with a little story paying homage to history, myth, pop-culture and classic storytelling. They’re the perfect gift for anyone who loves to accessorise.
My wardrobe needed a bit of sprucing up so I chose some new Diane Kennedy pieces to call my own. I took my time to pick what I would get the most wear out of, fit into my existing wardrobe and match my personal hat collection.
I love this Justify jacket! I love the weight of it, the cut and especially the colour. Heather Lake Twill is the perfect shade of blue for me. This jacket can easily be worn for a dressier occasion or alternatively with jeans. It’s so soft and comfortable yet has a great shape that doesn’t make me look boxy. I’ve teamed it up here with the Midnight Cowl in the same shade of blue. This super flattering neckline works so well with the matching jacket. I’m 5’4″ so I chose the Petite Serene Pant in black. The wide legged pants give an interesting silhouette to this outfit that I love. Fluevog Boots.
I couldn’t help but add this super cute Erstwilder brooch to the jacket to give it a little holiday feel. This one is called Season’s Greetings and depicts the perfect winter scene in a mini snowglobe. So festive!
Steel and Black stripes enhance this tunics flattering lines. It’s nice to get away from too much black at this time of year so I went with the Strength, Steel and Black striped tunic. I paired it up with a pair of Steel grey Balance Pants. I like a skinny pant and the zippers at the ankles on these trousers look so cool unzipped and worn with interesting boots or shoes. These will be going into heavy rotation this winter. The perfect addition to my wardrobe. Fluevog Boots.
This Verve jacket is amazing! It’s the perfect weight for layering and has so many interesting details from it’s asymmetric design, shawl collar and antique silver tone zipper hardware. The fit is sublime and the length is brilliant. I can wear this as a jacket or a tunic with a pair of leggings when it’s zipped up. I’ve paired this jacket with the Strength Tunic again but this time I went for the Black and Cream Stripe. I just adore the graphic look of these bold stripes. I’m also wearing the Balance Pant in Black and I’ve left the ankle zippers closed to create a skinny legging look. Erstwilder Brooch. Fluevog Shoes.
All in all I’m really happy with the choices I made. Being dressed in head to toe luxurious Bamboo is like a warm, soft hug. Who doesn’t need one of those??
We can dream about clothing that’s so practical that it serves more than one function. Think about that for a moment. Is it bad that the first thing that comes to mind for me is being able to reverse my top if I spill something on it? Or maybe I left the house feeling one way and and later my mood has changed. I might like my outfit to reflect that.
Perfect For Travel
How perfect for a weekend away that you can get more looks out of fewer things! Having reversible clothing is the best way we know to double your outfit potential while travelling. We must also mention here that these pieces are wonderfully soft and comfortable allowing you to travel in true comfort.
The Reversible Cowl, Pant and Vest are three core pieces that can be worn separately or together:
1. Our Classic Cowl tunic, re-imagined in this soft and fabulous Canadian-made fabric we call Blur. This style is fully reversible with one side being black with light grey striations and the other side being mid heather grey. Yoga-style “flatlock” stitching makes this possible (it’s a style of stitching that looks virtually the same on both sides) Full length sleeves and a comfy-cowl neckline make this DK piece one of our most versatile must-haves.
2. Our Reversible Vest features unique seaming details including an angled princess seam, a back yoke and center back seam provide a perfect fit. Smooth yoga pant-style “Flatlock” stitching throughout.
3. Our Reversible Pant is a slim pant similar to a legging, as it has a narrow fit. Smooth yoga pant-style “Flatlock” stitching throughout.
Versatility is really the key word here. Being able to wear one piece of clothing two different ways not only gives you more bang for the buck, it also allows you to easily change your look. Plus they’re all on sale, 25% off right now here
While I’ve never met her in person, I’ve spoken with Johanne Cadieux from Mode & Distinction on the phone many times over the years. There is something very different and wonderful about her. She has the most lovely French accent but there is more to it than that. She has that unmistakable warmth to her voice that instantly puts a person at ease and you can’t help feeling a sense of comfort when you speak with her. After hanging up the phone I would always find myself smiling. Johanne has been my customer of Diane Kennedy clothing since 2010.
So, what’s the story of Johanne Cadeaux?
Johanne owns a beautiful store in the Hull area of Gatineau, Quebec called Mode & Distinction Plus. It’s just across the river from Ottawa and indeed many of her customers come from there. Johanne caters to the plus size shopper although she is not a plus size woman. This is something I find very intriguing. It turns out there’s a very sweet reason why Johanne decided to open a shop for larger women. Many years ago, Johanne lost her sister Diane in a tragic car accident. Diane was, in Johannes words, “a beautiful, confident plus size woman.” The spirit of her sister inspires and guides Johannes decisions still. She considers her a business partner.
Johanne finds beauty in women of all sizes. She makes it her goal to create a welcoming environment. How does she deal with women making negative comments about themselves?
“It’s at that moment, says Joanne, “that my training in psychology helps me. Women feel included. I help them to show off with a modern contemporary style and they end up being beautiful.”
We think the women in Gatineau are so lucky to have Johanne, her team and their lovely store to shop in. We also feel very lucky to be part of that. To be on the receiving end of Johannes wonderful energy is a gift.
Thank-you Johanne for being such an awesome customer all these years!
Every new season I can’t help but choose my favourites, whether it’s new colours or tunics. I’ve been especially anticipating some beautiful new heather bamboo in green and blue. Heather Forest is a deep mossy green marbled with black and Heather Lake is a soft slatey dark blue with just a touch of cream. Here’s my pick’s of the Fall 2017 tunics.
The Renew Wrap Tunic
My top pick this year is a mock wrap tunic with a mock wrap belt called the Renew Wrap. We all love V necks and wraps are universally flattering and lovely. But they can be fussy to fit and sit right on the body. Hence the mock feature, all of the look but none of the fuss. Same goes for a tie belt. This tunic has all the great advantages of these features with absolutely no fuss, you just slip it over your head and its ready to go. It’s a really flattering shape (gives you a waist even if you don’t have one!) and in this fabulous Forest green colour, it’s my top pic for sure.
The Vision Tunic in Black & Steel
My fav tunic of all time is the Playful tunic partly because of the V neck, extra room around my tummy and 2 handy pockets. But it’s time for a new fav, The Vision Tunic is the ticket. The same functional features that have always made it work for me but also added stripes, colour blocking and seam details to change up the look.
Mixed Media Tunic in Heather Lake (coming soon)
Not too far off is a brand new style I’ve called Mixed Media Tunic. It combines sold black bamboo with the Heather lake shade and also Heather Lake blue in a beautiful herringbone jacquard. I can’t wait for this tunic in this colour, it’s lovely and quite unique. With vertical seam lines, an asymmetrical hem, handy pocket, V neck…it’s got all the hallmarks of becoming one of my favourite tunics. Can wait!
